Insight: John 5:19-6:15
Jesus again performed a miracle by walking on the water at the Sea of Galilee. This was to authenticate His authority as the Son of God.
He subsequently taught the people at Capernaum that He is the “bread of life.” His teaching reflected that not only is He the Son of God (as reflected in the Trinity with the Father and the Holy Spirit), but the only road to God and eternal life is through Himself and no other way. Some people (along with some of His disciples) did not respond to this teaching and walked away.
God and People
God the Father placed His seal of approval on Jesus. The work of God is to believe in Jesus. God has chosen His believers. God has determined that all believers have eternal life. All believers will be taught by God. God sent Jesus.
The people asked Jesus wanted to know what Jesus’ work was. Jesus’ response was to believe in the One that the Father sent (i.e. Jesus Himself). Some people asked for the Eternal Bread (Jesus), but some grumbled. At this, some of the disciples left Jesus (but not the 12 disciples).
Jesus
Jesus walked on the water. Jesus is the True Bread from Heaven. Eating His Bread and drinking His Blood results in eternal life. (This is signified by recognizing Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross. It is celebrated by sharing a loaf of bread and drinking some juice.) Jesus attested that the Spirit gives life.
My Response
Sin: Working for food that spoils
Promises:
- Whoever comes to Jesus will never go hungry (a believer is feed by His Word).
- Jesus will raise believers up to Heaven on the last day (at the Judgment after the end of civilization).
Example: Jesus pointed to the will of the Father in sending Him to give us eternal life.
Command: Do not work for food that spoils, but food that endures to eternal life.
