Is it possible that God’s Word refers to events and a “religion” that occurred millenniums ago, or is it relevant today? In particular, can it apply to an individual’s life today? If we try to consider whether or not God’s Word applies to us, then we are only looking at it subjectively from our own perspective. Sometimes what we think is true, may not be true. That is, we are not always right. This is because we are imperfect beings. Some people think they know everything, but yet, they are fooling themselves. We cannot claim omniscience (knowing everything), because only our Creator, knows everything. This puts us in a delicate situation where we must humble ourselves and listen to what God’s Word says. This is an important step if God’s Word is to work in a person’s life.
When Jesus counseled His disciples, He told them, “. . . whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, . . . you may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:12-14). God’s Word now crosses over from an identification with Christ to performing works in Christ’s name. When a person repents of their sin and believes in Christ, that person then is endowed with God’s power to accomplish what He wants to accomplish (not us). Sometimes what He wants is not what we want, but nevertheless, we trust in Him. Since Jesus is the Word of God, His Word empowers us to do His work. This is why new believers in Jesus Christ might wonder, “Why am I still here on the earth when I could now be with Christ forever in heaven?” The reason why we are still here is that He has His work for us to do. Our response should be, “We are unworthy servants, we have only done our duty” (Luke 17:10).
